#1: Songwriting

Have you ever tried to write your own song, but didn't know exactly how to put it down on paper? Maybe you've had a tune or lyrics in your head and don't quite know the best way to put the two together. Can you sing the melody or pluck it out on the guitar, but are curious of how to notate the song? This workshop gives students a running start in creating and workshopping their own music.

This workshop will offer the following:

♪ Tips for putting lyrics to melody

♪ Theory and composition tools for pairing melody with chords and harmony

♪ Guidance for how to record and edit your songs with GarageBand program

#2: Jazz and Improvisation

The focus of the Jazz Workshop will be on the fundamentals of jazz and improvising in a group setting.  Students will learn the roles of various instruments and how they work together, as well as how to play through changes and the music theory behind it.  They will learn how to play together and use their ears to navigate the music, both as accompanists and soloists.

♪ Predetermined tunes so students will have a chance to bring them to their teachers for guidance and practice them before class.  Charts will be given out the week before with recommended recordings (singers know your key for the tune beforehand)

♪ A theory lesson on how to navigate the changes while improvising

♪ A swingin’ jam on the chosen tunes, taking turns improvising and comping

#3: Chamber Music

If you've been getting a little lonely practicing all by yourself, you are not the only one!  Music can be a fun thing to experience with others.  This collaborative/chamber music course will give students the tools they need to be able to collaborate in duet and small group settings in a more classical tradition.  This course is open to all instruments offered at FMS and we will have multiple teachers of different instruments available for coaching.  Students will be grouped with others with similar abilities or have the opportunity to play with the teachers.

Classes will consist of:

♪ Predetermined pieces so students will have  chance to bring them to their teachers for guidance prior to coming to the workshop

♪ Recordings of the other parts so they can practice with the other part

♪ Tips on collaborating with others and how to practice accordingly

♪ An opportunity to find others to collaborate with for future recitals and performance opportunities

#4: Rockband

We will spend our time focusing on rock-style music from current and past times with an emphasis on how to collaborate, read chord changes, and even record your band's song.  This fun and challenging workshop will demonstrate how the different instruments in a rock band work together.  Students will meet other students with similar music interests and will learn to collaborate with them in rock style.

 Classes will consist of:

♪ Predetermined pieces so students will have chance to bring them to their teachers for guidance prior to coming to the workshop

♪ Suggested recordings of the songs the students will be learning so they can familiarize themselves with the songs

♪Tips on collaborating with others and how to practice accordingly

♪ An opportunity to find others to collaborate with for future recitals and performance opportunities
